THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay Fire & Rescue (TBFR) was quick to respond to a structural fire in a vacant residential building on Edward St. South at approximately 1030 pm this evening. The fire is believed to have started in the basement of a vacant home in the 900 block of Edward St. South.

Upon arrival, crews encountered heavy smoke and flame in the basement migrating to other portions of the home. A “Defensive” strategy was immediately declared by TBFR Incident Command officer due to the advanced fire condition in the building. Crews were also tasked with preventing the fire from spreading to an adjacent occupied home located only 2 meters from the burning structure.

Fire crews worked to efficiently knock down the well-seated fire, bringing the fire quickly under control and preventing extension to the nearby exposure. At this time TBFR crews wearing self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) were able to do a complete search of the fire-damaged structure to confirm that there was no one in the home at the time of the fire.

Cause of the fire is under investigation at this time.

A total of 5 Pumper trucks, 1 Aerial Ladder truck and 1 Command Unit responded to bring this fire under control.
