THUNDER BAY – NEWS – A woodland Indigenous mural that was removed from the Shelter House building where the managed alcohol program is hosted is whole again. The mural with the middle ripped off since last fall has been given much needed some love and attention today.
After speaking on numerous occasions with McKellar Ward Councillor Brian Hamilton, who when contacted by NetNewsLedger promised action, the mural has gone up a day early after NNL was told by The Rotary Shelter House that it was scheduled to be taken down on May 16th, 2019.
The History
In November 2018, a wind storm blew a panel off of our beautiful Woodland Indigenous mural with a powerful message displayed on it that was painted by well-respected artist Roy Thomas on the Kwae Kii Win building. They decided to wait out the winter and spring. The wind did cause a small tear in the fibreglass so this panel has a little bit of wear, but it has been fixed and will continue to enjoy this wonderful piece of art.
The Roy Thomas mural that was donated to empower the people who attend the Alcohol Program and all the people who drive by and walk by the The Rotary Shelter House who use the facility for numerous struggles, like food, needles and shelter at night.
Thunder Bay needs these solid reminders of the true beauty of the Indigenous culture. It helps build unity and reconciliation. This mural will help bring back some hope and encouragement to the ones who will truly see this beautiful mural with its meaning for what it stands for.
Great job McKellar Ward Councillor, Mr. Hamilton. This is the kind of positive action and good news that helps our city.
