RED LAKE – Bob Nault, Member of Parliament (Kenora riding), was pleased to participate in the grand opening of the Red Lake Emergency Shelter.
“Every Northerner and Canadian deserves to have a safe place to go in times of need. We know that in times of crisis, people can often be left without a place to call home. The Red Lake Emergency Shelter helps provide a home, as well as transitional living spaces so they can live on their own and eventually move out into the community.
“In January 2017, the federal government invested $300,000 to the Red Lake Area Emergency Shelter through the Rural and Remote Homelessness Partnership Strategy for the purchase of a new building and renovations.
“This investment was made possible through Service Canada’s partnership with United Way for the Homelessness Partnership Strategy (HPS), which implements a housing first approach by providing quality housing and associated supports for vulnerable individuals.
“KDSP also supported the shelter for the renovations with an additional non-repayable loan of $150,000 and provided core operational funding of $100,000. I also want to acknowledge and thank the volunteers with their local fundraising efforts that helped make the new shelter a reality. In my view, these efforts really illustrate the strength and vitality of the people of Red Lake.
“So much hard work and dedication has gone into keeping the shelter doors open – today is truly a celebration of the commitment of all those involved. I am very proud of the necessary service the Red Lake Emergency Shelter provides to our community, and I am glad to see that it will continue for many years to come.”
