THUNDER BAY – SPORTS – It was a good weekend for three local divers at the Ontario Spring Provincials in London. 11 clubs from across the province participated in the three-day competition. In addition to podium finishes, the divers were also trying to achieve qualifying scores for the Junior National Championships in July.

Michael Doerr competed in the boy’s 11-year-old age group. He won gold and two silver medals in the 5m platform, 1m and 3m springboards, respectively. Doerr also earned national qualifying scores in both springboard events. This means that he is able to compete in those two events at the Junior Development Nationals in Regina, July 5-7.

Abbey Meloche competed in the girl’s 16-18-year-old age group. She won gold, bronze, and silver medals in her 1m springboard, 3m springboard, and 10m platform, respectively.

In the women’s Open 1m springboard, Meloche placed 6th.

Christopher Lake-Voros competed in the boy’s 16-18-year-old age group. He placed 5thin the 3m springboard.

“Diving Canada has set a challenging score to reach to qualify for both the Junior Nationals”, said head coach Jason Napper. “There are a couple more competitions this season at which they can all make the standard.”

These divers now have some time to further their training in preparation for the Ontario Summer Provincials, May 17-19 in Ottawa. Next week is March Break and the club will be hosting day camps available to local kids 7-14 years old who want to participate for a fee.  There are a couple of ways to pre-register by phone:  807-684-3341, email: tbdc@tbaytel.net or online at tbdc.ca. While the day camps are taking place 9 other Thunder Bay divers will be practicing to get set for Kitchener’s inaugural Phoenix Invitational, March 16-17.
