THUNDER BAY – WEATHER – Thunder Bay has enjoyed a mid-winter ‘heat wave’ on Wednesday. The temperature in the city rose to -2c in the mid-afternoon.
For Thunder Bay, Environment Canada says we can expect periods of snow beginning late this evening with accumulations of 2 to 4 cm. Winds will be up to 15 km/h. The overnight low minus 12. The weather service says the wind chill will be minus 9 in the evening and minus 16 overnight.
For Valentine’s Day in Thunder Bay, we can look forward to periods of snow. There will be local blowing snow late in the afternoon with total snowfall amounts of up to 5 cm. Winds becoming northwest 30 km/h gusting to 50 near noon. The high for Thursday will be minus 5 with wind chill values near minus 16.
Other parts of Canada are struggling with winter storms, travel problems, and freezing cold temperatures. Globally there are some real weather anomalies. There has been snow in Hawaii.
Saskatchewan has Extreme Cold Warnings in effect for much of the province.
Regina is experiencing extreme cold. The entire southwestern portion of the province is under the spell of an Arctic vortex of cold. Environment Canada says that “Extreme wind chills of minus 40 or colder will continue off and on during the next day or two as an arctic high-pressure ridge slowly builds over southern Saskatchewan. The coldest wind chills will occur during the overnight and morning hours.
“For tonight at least, regions east of Prince Albert as well as near the Manitoba border should not be quite as cold as western regions due to more cloud cover.”
There are also extreme cold warnings for the northwest of Alberta. The City of Edmonton is facing extremely cold temperatures. The coldest wind chill values will be near minus 40. A multi-day episode of very cold wind chills continues, states the weather service.
Under mainly clear skies, extreme cold wind chills will continue for parts of central and northern Alberta. These extreme values are expected to persist until at least this weekend. Wind chills will generally improve during the afternoon periods before returning overnight and in the morning hours.
However, it is different in the southern parts of Alberta. Sunshine Village Ski Resort is experiencing great ski conditions. Today the temperature is -11c at the resort.
For those looking for a great skiing experience, the snow conditions at “Canada’s Best Snow” include 180 inches of snow (456cm) so far this year. That is 15 feet of snow.

There have also been reports of snow in of all places Hawaii.
