THUNDER BAY – This past weekend 9 Thunderbolt athletes travelled to Toronto and competed in the 2018 Youth Cup. Thunderbolt swimmers did not disappoint racing against athletes from across Ontario winning 9 gold medals, 6 silver medals and 2 bronze.
“Swimming at a high level is challenging and staying on top is really difficult. The Thunderbolts proved once again this weekend they belong at high performance meets like this. The athletes continue to swim times that put them at the top of Ontario and Canada swim rankings,” said Tommaso Panizza head coach Thunderbolt Swim Club. “Plus breaking many ‘Bolt records was just awesome”
Five Thunderbolt club records fell this weekend. Isabel Harri had an outstanding meet breaking three club records and winning gold medals in the 100m and 200m Breast Stroke and the 200m Individual Medley.
“I am so happy with all my races this weekend,” said Harri. “All the hard training leading up to this meet really paid off. I met all the goals I set for myself. I am looking forward to setting new goals with my coach for the upcoming long course swim season,” added Harri.
Other record breakers were Cameron Johnsen in the 50m Breast Stroke and Hannah Johnsen in the 100m Back Stroke.
Gold medal winners this weekend were Hannah Johnsen 800m Freestyle, 200m Individual Medley, 400m Individual Medley, Isabel Harri 400m Individual Medley, and Matthew Foulds in the 400m Freestyle.
Other medal winners were Zoe Hunt silver 200m Freestyle, silver 800m Freestyle, bronze 100m Breaststroke, Luke Foulds silver 1500m Freestyle, bronze 400m Freestyle, Hannah Johnsen silver 200m Backstroke, Matthew Foulds silver 200m Individual Medley.
“Every swimmer turned in best times this weekend. Our hard work is already paying off. I am looking forward to our next swim meet,” added Panizza.
Other strong performances were turned in this weekend by Amy Knott, Nickolas Black and Emily Murphy.
