Environment Canada has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for the Kenora region.

The storm is also causing delays for school busing. Judi Green reports, “Be advised that due to the significant storm system moving through the Kenora area,  please expect delays with your school buses.  For safety,  drivers will pull buses over when the rain/hail impacts visibility. ”

Severe thunderstorm warning in effect for:

  • Kenora – Grassy Narrows – Whitedog
  • Sioux Narrows – Nestor Falls – Morson

At 7:51 a.m. CDT, Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a severe thunderstorm capable of producing very strong wind gusts, up to nickel size hail and heavy rain.

Thunderstorms with very heavy downpours continue to move into the area form Southeastern Manitoba. Total rainfall amounts of 50 mm or more are possible within these thunderstorms along with strong wind gusts to 90 km/h and 2 to 4 cm hail.

There is a report of loonie sized hail from near Kenora this morning.

Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights and maintain a safe following distance. Intense lightning is likely with any thunderstorm that develops. Avoid driving through water on roads.
