Kenora – Four men have been fined for offences under the Fisheries Act, the Ontario Fishery Regulations and the Liquor Licence Act.
Ken Loranger of Crofton, British Columbia, pleaded guilty and was fined $1,250 for possessing walleye of prohibited size, $200 for fishing without a licence and $150 for having open liquor in a boat.
Shawn Benson of Calgary, Alberta, pleaded guilty and was fined $200 for fishing without a licence and $150 for having open liquor in a boat.
Kerry Loranger and Rob Loranger of Kenora both pleaded guilty and were fined $150 each for having open liquor in a boat.
Court heard that on July 23, 2017, a conservation officer inspected the four men as they were fishing on the Winnipeg River. The men were in possession of six walleye of prohibited size and claimed to be fishing under Métis harvesting rights. However, they subsequently indicated that they were not asserting aboriginal rights and pleaded guilty.
