Forest Fire Update

THUNDER BAY – WILDFIRE Update – There were thirteen new fires confirmed in the region by the afternoon of August 9.

  • Sioux Lookout Fire Number 111 is being held at 0.1 hectares and is located 10 kilometres south of Carling Lake.
  • Dryden Fire Number 44 is being held at 0.3 hectares and is located near Winnage Lake.
  • Red Lake Fire Number 163 is not under control at 0.3 hectares and is located south of Rowdy Lake.
  • Dryden Fire Number 45 is not under control at 1 hectare and is located south of Fawcett Lake.
  • Dryden Fire Number 46 has been declared out at 0.1 hectares and was located near Brightsand Lake
  • Dryden Fire Number 47 is not under control at 0.5 hectares and is located along Mennin Creek, south of Borups Corners.
  • Dryden Fire Number 48 is being held at 0.1 hectares and is located near Bunyan Lake.
  • Dryden Fire Number 49 is not under control at 0.1 hectares and is located near Thunder Lake.
  • Fort Frances Fire Number 44 is not under control at 0.2 hectares and is located near Manion Lake.
  • Kenora Fire Number 105 is not under control at 0.2 hectares and is located near Robinson Lake.
  • Fort Frances Fire Number 45 is not under control at 0.4 hectares and is located near Sunshine Lake.
  • Fort Frances Fire Number 46 is not under control at 0.1 hectares and is located near Messada Lake.
  • Red Lake Fire Number 164 is not under control at 0.1 hectares and is located near Butson Lake.

There are 87 active fires in the region, 76 of which are either under observation, being held or under control.

Kenora Fire Number 71 is being held at 10, 272 hectares. Crews continue to work on this fire and are extinguishing areas in the interior of the fire.Fire hazard in the Northwest Region
The forest fire hazard is moderate to high in the western portions of the region and low to moderate in the eastern portions of the region.

Ontario Parks restricts access in Woodland Caribou Provincial Park
Several large fires in Woodland Caribou Park have necessitated some restrictions for backcountry travellers. Ontario Parks is restricting access to some canoe routes as well as access to a number of lakes. You can find more details here.
