Four New Fires – Warming Trend Expected to Increase Danger
THUNDER BAY – Seeing a warming trend over the next week with the fire hazard slowly starting to rebound as fuels on the surface become more receptive to burning. Thunderstorms over the past five days have resulted in over 32,000 lightning strikes province-wide.
There were four new fires confirmed in the Northwest Region by the mid-afternoon of Aug. 7.
There are currently 73 active fires in the northwest. Four of these fires are not under control, one is being held, four are under control and 64 are under observation.
The fire hazard is moderate to high in the Fort Frances, Dryden and Kenora Districts. The remainder of the Northwest Region including Red Lake, Sioux Lookout, Thunder Bay and Nipigon Districts are under a low to moderate hazard for forest fires.
New fires for Aug. 7
- There have been four new fires in the Northwest Region with fires located in Red Lake, Kenora, Fort Frances and Sioux Lookout. Fires range from 0.1ha – 0.4ha with no concerns on any of fires at the present time.
Travel restrictions in Woodland Caribou Provincial Park
Forest Fires within Woodland Caribou Provincial Park in the Red Lake District have resulted in the closure of canoe routes to backcountry paddlers. Access to a number lakes within the park has also been restricted. You can find more details on these restrictions here.
