THUNDER BAY – NEWS – Kam River Park is a diamond in the rough just east of the downtown Fort William Business Improvement Area. This park has a Sailor’s Memorial, the Thunderbird statue, the James Whalen tugboat, and a VIA rail train.

The boardwalk along the Kam River is a great walkway that attracts lots of walkers and offers a place where many people can go fishing. It is also a place where watching the geese is a popular pastime.

The park has also over time worn down. Most of the wood on the benches are in need of replacement. The James Whalen has been vandalized over time.

For many people, this park is a place that they want to see become a safe, fun, and far busier place to go.

Over the past several nights, Councillor Frank Pullia who is running for Mayor has facilitated community gatherings of interested people, including several of the candidates seeking seats at the council circle in this fall’s election. There have been local business owners, and interested residents also coming together toward making a positive change at the park.

The discussions have involved ideas on what, and how to make a difference at Kam River Park.

What is exciting about these discussions are that the people who care are showing up and starting to take steps to put the words into action.

Last night, Brian Hamilton, a local business owner, and candidate in the McKellar ward brought down some small round tables and chairs. The difference in the atmosphere in the park could be seen almost instantly.

The goal of the discussions is toward improving Kam River Park.

From the start of these discussions, the positives are starting to build, it might just be the start of something really special.

Kam River Park, the Fort William downtown, and Thunder Bay deserve no less.
