Forest Fire Situation Update Northwest Region -July 13, 2018

The Forest Fire Hazard heading into the weekend is high in Northern Ontario

THUNDER BAY – WILDFIRE UPDATE – There were six new fires in the Northwest Region by the early afternoon of July 13.

  • Kenora Fire 69 was reported mid-morning near Olson Rd. north of the Kenora Bypass (Hwy. 17A). The fire has been declared out.
  •  A FireRanger crew is holding Red Lake Fire 68, a 0.2-hectare fire near the south shore of Borel Lake, approximately 50 kilometres northwest of the community of Red Lake.
  • Red Lake Fire 69 is located just east of Pilot Lake, approximately 83 kilometres east of the town of Ear Falls. The fire is currently not under control.
  • Sioux Lookout Fire 64 is among of a cluster of new lightning fire starts (including SLK Fires 63 and 65). Located north of Adamhay Lake, The 0.2-hectare fire is not under control.
  • Sioux Lookout Fire 65 is located on a peninsula on De Lesseps Lake in St. Raphael Provincial Park. The 0.6 hectare lightning fire is not under control.
  • Red Lake Fire 70 is an 80-hectare fire burning south of McCusker Lake in Weeskayjahk Ohtahzhoganeeng Provincial Park. The fire is currently not under control.

Discovered in the evening hours of July 12, Nipigon Fire 33 is a 12-hectare lightning-caused fire located just west of Studd Lake about 19 kilometres southeast of the Albany River. At the time of this post, the fire was not under control.

The fire hazard is currently high in the western portion of the region in the Kenora, Dryden, Red Lake and Fort Frances Districts. Hazard conditions range from moderate to high in the Sioux Lookout and Nipigon Districts and low to moderate in the Thunder Bay District.

Fires near the remote community of Nibinamik (Summer Beaver ) have been active. Nipigon Fire 30, located 25 kilometres northeast of the community has been remapped at approximately 15,000 hectares. Nine kilometres to the southeast of the community, Nipigon Fire 29 has grown to 5,000 hectares. A FireRanger crew is establishing a hose line along the northwest flank of the fire. An ignition team will try to bring the fire to natural boundaries.

At present, there are 57 active fires in the region, 49 of which are under observation, being held, or under control.
