Forest Fire Situation Update = Northwest Region

July 8, 2018 – Time of Report 18:00

THUNDER BAY – Wildfire Update – There were 12 new fires confirmed by the afternoon of Sunday, July 8. These fires are a result of recent lightning that passed through the far north.

  • Sioux Lookout Fire Number 48 is being observed at 0.2 hectares and is located near Lemont Lake in Pipestone River Provincial Park.
  • Sioux Lookout Fire Number 49 is not under control at 150 hectares and is located near Brodeur Lake.
  • Nipigon Fire Number 28 is not under control at 0.3 hectares and is located east of Muskrat Lake.
  • Sioux Lookout Fire Number 50 is not under control at 10 hectares and is located near Waterous Lake, 15 kilometres west of Kingfisher Lake First Nation.
  • Sioux Lookout Fire Number 51 is being observed at 20 hectares and is located near Ariott Lake.
  • Sioux Lookout Fire Number 52 is being observed at 0.1 hectares and is located near Ariott Lake.
  • Sioux Lookout Fire Number 53 is being observed at 5 hectares and is located 10 kilometres southeast of Wunnumin Lake First Nation.
  • Sioux Lookout Fire Number 54 is being observed at 0.1 hectares and is located south of Windigo Lake.
  • Sioux Lookout Fire Number 55 is being observed at 8 hectares and is located south of Windigo Lake.
  • Sioux Lookout Fire Number 56 is being observed at 10 hectares and is located south of Windigo Lake.
  • Sioux Lookout Fire Number 57 is being observed at 75 hectares and is located 25 kilometres southeast of Wunnumin Lake First Nation.
  • Red Lake Fire Number 64 is being observed at 0.1 hectares and is located on an island on Trout Lake.

There was one fire confirmed after yesterday’s report. Fort Frances Fire Number 21 has been declared out at 0.1 hectares and was located near Partridge Crop Lake.

Following days of reduced fire activity and successful suppression efforts, resources are being demobilized from Red Lake Fire Number 38 near North Spirit Lake and Sioux Lookout Fire Number 37 near Sachigo Lake in the far north. Both fires will be monitored by their respective districts once crews and equipment are removed from the fire.

There are currently 42 active fires in the region, 38 of which are under observation, under control, or being held.

The Northwest Region continues to assist the Northeast Region with fire crews and personnel following several days with multiple new fires in that part of the province.

The forest fire hazard is low to moderate in the southern portions of the region and high to extreme in the northern portions of the region.
