THUNDER BAY – There were no new fires confirmed in the Northwest Region by the late afternoon of July 3.
Currently, there are 36 active fires in the region, 34 of which are either under observation, being held or under control.
Recent rainfall in the far north is helping FireRanger crews in their efforts on Red Lake Fire 38 (28,217 hectares) near North Spirit Lake and Sioux Lookout Fire 37 (200 hectares) near Sachigo Lake. Both fires remain not under control.
West of the community of Pikangikum, FireRangers are holding the 156 hectare Red Lake Fire 60 which started June 28.
Twenty kilometres south of the remote community of Summer Beaver, Nipigon Fire 24 was declared under control at 55 hectares this morning.
The forest fire hazard in the Northwest Region is predominantly low with a band of moderate hazard running through the Kenora, Dryden Sioux Lookout Districts.
Crews from the Northwest are being deployed to assist the Northeast Region which saw over a dozen new fire starts July 3 as the forest fire hazard escalates in that part of the province.
