THUNDER BAY – WEATHER – This alert ended. Environment Canada has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for Thunder Bay this morning (June 29, 2018).
Severe thunderstorm watch in effect for:
- City of Thunder Bay
- Kakabeka Falls – Whitefish Lake – Arrow Lake
Conditions are favourable for the development of dangerous thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and torrential rain.
Strong thunderstorms have developed along the Ontario Minnesota border this morning and are moving eastward through Atikokan and may move over Thunder bay later this morning. Heavy downpours may continue through the regions following the main line of thunderstorms. These thunderstorms may produce wind gusts to 90 km/h, nickel size hail, and rainfall amounts of 50 to 70 mm.
Strong wind gusts can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Lightning kills and injures Canadians every year. Remember, when thunder roars, go indoors!
Severe thunderstorm watches are issued when atmospheric conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce one or more of the following: large hail, damaging winds, torrential rainfall.
