THUNDER BAY – Wild Fire Update – There were five new fires confirmed by the afternoon of Saturday June 16.
- Air tankers were dispatched to assist crews at Red Lake Fire 38, a 250 hectare fire located approximately 11.5 kilometres southeast of the airport at North Spirit Lake. The lightning-caused fire is currently not under control.
- Red Lake Fire number 37 is 0.5 hectares in size and located near the boundary of Weeskayjahk Ohtahzhoganeeng Provincial Park. The fire is not under control.
- Kenora Fire 56, near the Township of Minaki has been declared out at 0.1 hectares.
- Sioux Lookout Fire 18 is a one hectare, lightning-caused fire in the far north, approximately 20 kilometres north-west of Bearskin Lake. The fire is currently being observed.
- Sioux Lookout Fire 19 is 25 hectares is size and is located south of Sachigo Lake. The fire is currently not under control.
There are currently 16 active fires in the Northwest Region.
The fire hazard in the region is currently low throughout the southern portions of the region. A moderate hazard exists throughout the Red Lake, and portions of the Sioux Lookout, Thunder Bay, and Nipigon Districts. High to extreme hazard exists in northern sections of the Sioux Lookout District and northern and eastern reaches of the Nipigon District.
