THUNDER BAY – J.P. Levesque, Chief of Police of the Thunder Bay Police Service, has announced his retirement after 31 years of service. Chief Levesque became the 8th Chief of Police for the service in 2011. Thunder Bay Police Services Board Chair Jackie Dojack accepted Chief Levesque’s retirement. Read more.

ATTAWAPISKAT – A Canadian Ranger and a 13-year-old Junior Canadian Ranger helped the Royal Canadian Air Force airlift an injured snowmobiler in April from a remote hunting camp near Attawapiskat in Northern Ontario.

The snowmobiler, a young woman from the isolated Cree community of Attawapiskat on the James Bay coast, was in a small family party that was hunting geese when she was knocked unconscious after being thrown from her snowmobile. 

A member of the party used a satellite phone to seek help for her. The call went to the emergency services dispatch centre in Timmins. It was passed on through the Nishnawbe-Aski Police to the Ontario Provincial Police, who called on the Canadian Armed Forces for assistance. Read more.

Events

The second-year students from Confederation College’s Native Child and Family Services program will be hosting a Midnight Medicine Walk on Friday evening. Presented in partnership with Medicine Walk founder Lauren Chopek, the evening is intended to bring awareness to those lost in the River of Tears, as well as to bring the community together to heal as one.

The event is open to the community and will welcome elders Ira Johnson and John Gagnon. Participants can expect guest speakers, unity activities and a walk that will proceed along the McIntyre River, ending back at Confederation College.

Gas Up for Less

The price of a litre of gas is actually more expensive today in Dryden than Thunder Bay. Fuel prices across the region range from $1.349 in Dryden, to $1.24.4 at the Husky on Chipman Street in Kenora,  In Thunder Bay, the lowest price in the city is $1346 at the Esso on Red River Road.  Out on the Fort William First Nation, gas prices are at $1.187 at THP.
