THUNDER BAY – The replacement of the aging Thunder Bay Jail is now one step closer to happening. A Request for Qualifications has been issued by the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services and Infrastructure Ontario. Minister Marie-France Lalonde says, “Investing in modern infrastructure is part of our plan to transform Ontario’s adult correctional system. This new facility will be a platform for innovation and a model for reintegration that supports better outcomes for those in our care and custody”.
The new correctional facility, under the terms of the RFQ which requests the proposals is due for the spring of 2019. Thunder Bay’s existing jail with a 325-bed, multi-purpose correctional complex.
The new facility which was funded under the 2018 Ontario Budget just announced by the Wynne government will replace the existing jail with a new 325-bed, multi-purpose correctional complex. The RFQ is seeking qualified companies to plan, design and ensure that the new facility meets all requirements.
According to the Ministry, the architectural firm NORR will monitor construction progress and provide co-ordination and oversight during the construction, commissioning and completion of the project.
“We will work together with our front-line staff and community partners to define and achieve this shared vision.”
