THUNDER BAY – Eight years ago, Vince Riccio ran for City Council. Last federal election the youthful Riccio ran for the federal Liberal nomination in Thunder Bay-Rainy River. Today, April 1st, 2018 he appears set for the next step in his political career.

Riccio shares: Despite my best efforts to stay away, I have been drawn in once again to the circle and ring that is politics. As Michael Corleone once stated in the Godfather, “just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in!” That is why I announce today my run for the highest political office in Thunder Bay – and no, I don’t mean the manager of the coming government run Ontario Cannabis stores.

There is so much I could outline and say in this first post as a vision for the region and city, however I cannot. In fact, people have asked me “why so serious?” How can you not be when you make a decision such as this?

I tell them, “Frankly my dear, I don’t give a damn.”

Update: NetNewsledger would like to thank you for enjoying our annual April 1st / April Fools Day story. Each year we have published a piece on April 1st, from wind turbines on the Sleeping Giant, draining Lake Nipigon into Lake Superior, Prime Minister Harper calling an election, Thunder Bay-Superior North MP Bruce Hyer joining the Conservative Party, MP Bruce Hyer being Appointed to or the “Sleeping Giant View Tax”.

One of the most famous April Fool’s stories in Media was when the BBC published a story on the Swiss Spaghetti Crop being hit by a late season frost. Across the media there are numerous pieces published on April Fool’s Day. Often the goal is to catch people and sometimes to make them think. We hope you enjoyed our piece this year. – James

As with any election, you never know how you’re going to fare and you never can count on any poll except the one on Election Day. I am optimistic, but life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get.

My platform as Mayor will be one which articulates a path which will lead Thunder Bay to a new generation. Making sure that our provincial and federal partners will support our projects to grow this community.

“In fact, I’ll make them an offer they can’t refuse.” We need a mayor that is willing to say, loud and proud, “Show me the money, Jerry! Show me the money!”

The amount of growth and development this city requires and will see if elected mayor will be unprecedented. You’ll look at your friends and remark, “Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas anymore.”

As citizens, we should be proud to call this city home and the citizens deserve that right. “You’ve got to ask yourself one question. Do I feel lucky? Well, do ya punk?” I’m sure the answer will be, yes.

You’re probably asking yourself “Surely, he can’t be serious?” I’m telling you.

I am serious and don’t call me Shirley.

But in all fairness, I am kidding and all joking aside, I am not announcing any campaign to become the next mayor of Thunder Bay.

This was an April Fools ?

What isn’t a joke, is the opportunity we have to elect our next slate on council. Don’t mess it up and ensure you make a wise choice. Because I don’t “pity no fool” who doesn’t vote or doesn’t think their vote counts!

Happy Easter and April Fools!

Vince Riccio
