THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay-Superior North Liberals held their nomination meeting this evening at the Italian Cultural Association. Minister Michael Gravelle will be the candidate, heading into what he stated will be his toughest campaign yet. To a full house, of Liberal supporters from across the riding, Minister Gravelle shared his thoughts and his goals heading into June 7ths election campaign.

To a packed house of local Liberals, Gravelle shared that he believes this will be his toughest campaign yet.

“For the last twenty-three years, it has been my privilege to serve as your provincial representative. Over that time, I’ve worked hard to be a strong voice for you at Queen’s Park and I hope you’ll give me the opportunity to continue to fight for our shared interests,” said Gravelle.

“As your MPP, I’m proud of the many accomplishments we’ve been able to achieve together for our riding. I’ve fought hard to expand the four-laning of Highway 11/17 between Thunder Bay and Nipigon, announced important next steps for the Ring of Fire with plans for all-season access roads to the project, fought to reduce the cost of energy by nearly 50% for some residents through the Fair Hydro Plan, and brought millions of dollars in new investment through the NOHFC to create and protect thousands of jobs across the Northwest,” Gravelle added. “NOHFC support from our government has been instrumental in stimulating sectors across the North, such as craft beer, agriculture, and food, as well as film and television, which continues to grow throughout the Northwest.”

“As a strong Northern advocate, I’m also proud of the work that our government has done to make life more affordable and better for all Northerners—things like investing in a new cardiovascular surgery unit being developed at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences, increasing the northern health travel grant, offering free prescription drugs to northerners under the age of 25, and reducing the cost of post-secondary tuition for thousands of students across the North,” Gravelle concluded.

Michael Gravelle was first elected as MPP in 1995. He has long been a dedicated community member, with an accomplished political and public-service record, including his current role as Minister of Northern Development and Mines and previous role as the Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry. He was a co-founder of the North of Superior Film Association and has served on the boards of the Magnus Theatre Company and the AIDS Committee of Thunder Bay. He worked as a federal and provincial political advisor, as a publicist for the CBC and as coordinator of Northern Development Councils for the Ministry of Northern Development, Mines and Forestry.

The Liberals locally are feeling confident going into the June 7th election. Gravelle will be facing Derek Parks, who is running in his second campaign for the Progressive Conservatives, and Lise Vaugeois in her first run for the New Democrats.
