THUNDER BAY – We are back in the grasp of winter again. Cold weather is in the forecast, this morning the cold spot in Ontario is Muskrat Dam First Nation at -26.4. Thunder Bay is right near that mark as well. The weather forecast is calling for clear skies early this morning and then a mix of sun and cloud with a 40 percent chance of flurries this afternoon. Winds will be up to 15 km/h. The daytime high should be minus 13. This morning the Wind Chill makes it feel like minus 32.

If you missed the Funday Sunday at Marina Park yesterday, you missed a lot of fun.

The City of Thunder Bay has been hosting Funday on Sundays at Marina Park. Celebrating Sunday/Funday today was a day of dog-sledding. The dogs and the people both had an amazing time. The rides on the dog sleds were booked solidly in less than an hour. Kids were also given the chance to try sledding for themselves. In this video, Kelly Graham shares information on dog-sledding.

The event was very popular, perhaps suggesting that an encore date should be scheduled. The four-hour event had all the available spaces filled in less than an hour. There was a large crowd on hand at the Spirit Garden all afternoon Sunday to watch the sled dogs pulling the sleds.

Today in History – The Challenger Disaster

In 1985, mere moments after Mission Control told the space shuttle Challenger to “Go with throttle up” the spacecraft exploded.

On January 28, 1986, the NASA shuttle orbiter mission STS-51-L and the tenth flight of Space Shuttle Challenger (OV-99) broke apart 73 seconds into its flight, killing all seven crew members, which consisted of five NASA astronauts and two payload specialists. The spacecraft disintegrated over the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Cape Canaveral, Florida, at 11:39 EST (16:39 UTC). The disintegration of the vehicle began after an O-ring seal in its right solid rocket booster (SRB) failed at liftoff. The O-ring was not designed to fly under unusually cold conditions as in this launch. Its failure caused a breach in the SRB joint it sealed, allowing pressurized burning gas from within the solid rocket motor to reach the outside and impinge upon the adjacent SRB aft field joint attachment hardware and external fuel tank. This led to the separation of the right-hand SRB’s aft field joint attachment and the structural failure of the external tank.

The mission was being watched by millions of school children as this mission had onboard teacher Sharon Christa McAuliffe who had trained for the mission and was going to be teaching lessons from space.
