Thunder Bay – DAY-STARTER – Good Morning Northwestern Ontario! For Thursday, January 18th, 2018 the forecast is for far more seasonal temperatures across much of the region. For the City of Thunder Bay, Environment Canada is calling for periods of light snow beginning early this morning and ending this afternoon then 40 percent chance of flurries later this afternoon. There is a risk of freezing drizzle. Today’s high is forecast at -4c.

For parts of the region, including Nipigon, Armstrong, Marathon, there is a Freezing Rain Warning issued by the Weather Service for Friday.

What Do You Need to Know?

Premier Kathleen Wynne shuffled her cabinet on Wednesday. Both local MPPs, Bill Mauro and Michael Gravelle remain in their respective portfolios. The move is being seen by many as preparation for the June Provincial Election.

New School for Atikokan

Thunder Bay Atikokan MPP and Minister of Municipal Affairs Bill Mauro was in Atikokan on Wednesday to announce funding for a new school.

The province is investing in a significant rebuild and addition to the existing high school to create a new K-12 school. The multi-million dollar project will accommodate nearly 417 students from K-12.

Thunder Bay City Councillor-at-Large Frank Pullia is our city’s Child and Youth Advocate. In this role, Pullia has invested a great deal of time meeting with many of the youth groups, and youth themselves to seek out what is needed for our growing youth population in the city.

Influenza A Outbreak Updates

The Thunder Bay District Health Unit has updated and extended Influenza A Outbreak alerts at a pair of facilities in Thunder Bay.

Officials at the Health Unit and St. Joseph’s Care Group have extended the Influenza A outbreak affecting the Medically Complex Services Unit (2 South) of St. Joseph’s Hospital, 35 N. Algoma St., to include the Medically Complex Services Unit (2 North).

All admissions, transfers, discharges and social activities have been canceled on these 2 units until further notice. Visitors are restricted to family members and caregivers only, so please call the facility for more information.

Officials at the Health Unit and Roseview Manor, located at 99 Shuniah Street, have extended the Influenza A outbreak to include the entire facility.

Lakehead University Sports

The LU Thunderwolves hockey team will play a pair of games Friday and Saturday night at the Fort William Gardens with long-time rival the Western Mustangs. The T-Wolves have been on top of their game at the Gardens and all the signs point to a very competitive and exciting pair of games. Make plans to be there!

The Men’s and Women’s basketball teams are also in action at the Thunderdome.
