What Do You Need to Know?

The Ring of Fire holds enormous potential for the North. Tonight at the Valhalla Inn, from 7-9PM, the CEDC is holding a public meeting to outline plans to entice Noront Resources to build a ferrochrome processing plant in the city. The four-city competition is between Thunder Bay/Fort William First Nation, Sault Ste. Marie, Sudbury, and Timmins. The deadline for submissions is Feb. 2.

“We have been working with Fort William First Nation Economic Development to prepare the proposal for submission,” said Doug Murray, CEO for CEDC. “We believe that the material mined in Northwestern Ontario should be processed in Northwestern Ontario to its maximum value added state.”

“The facility will process chromite ore from the Ring of Fire and is anticipated to create over 350 plant jobs that could expand and create all kinds of industrial service and supply spinoff opportunities. Ferrochrome is a crucial component in the production of stainless steel, a commodity growing at 5% annually. There is currently no ferrochrome production in North America.”

Energy Drinks and Your Children

Do your children or teenagers drink energy drinks? Professor Hammond from the University of Waterloo has just completed research that sends a strong warning to parents. “Most risk assessments to date have used coffee as a reference for estimating the health effects of energy drinks; however, it is clear these products pose a greater health risk,” said David Hammond a Professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Waterloo. “The health effects from energy could be due to the different ingredients than coffee, or the ways in which they consumed, including with alcohol or during physical activity; regardless, the findings suggest a need to increase surveillance of health effects from these products.”

Over half of Canadian youth and young adults who have consumed energy drinks have experienced negative health effects as a result, according to a study from the University of Waterloo.

3 Canadian Rangers Honoured

Chief Warrant Officer Robert Patterson, 3 CRPG’s group sergeant major, and Warrant Officer Carl Wolfe, an instructor, received special recognition awards from the Canadian Safe Boating Council for their “incredibly special” work promoting safe and responsible boating in Canada at a ceremony in Toronto. The awards, said Ted Rankine, the CSBC’s safety program manager, recognize “the work that they do, day in and day out, to keep their constituents, the communities they serve in the North, safer.”

Drowning rates in the remote regions of the Canadian North, he said, “are about eight times greater than the numbers in the South. The loss of life in these small, close-knit communities is tragic and the cost and time required for search and rescue in the North is enormous.”

Northern Ontario has the highest rate of Indigenous drowning deaths in Canada, because of the large Indigenous population, because few people learn to swim, and a lack of education about water safety. Read more … Canadian Rangers
