January 20, 2018 – Weather Warnings and Alerts are in effect for Manitoba, Ontario and into Quebec

THUNDER BAY – Winter weather is headed to Northwestern Ontario. Snowfall amounts as much as 25cm and winds with gusts over 50 km/h are in the forecast for areas further north of the city. Temperatures in Thunder Bay are above seasonal normals this morning. Drivers are likely to need to top up the windshield washer fluid.

Storm warnings and weather alerts are in effect for much of the region.  The storm system hit Manitoba over the past 36 hours. The weather system brought some heavy snow to central Manitoba Tuesday night. This system will exit the province early this morning leaving 10 to 15 cm of new snow in its wake.

A second weather disturbance gave unseasonably mild temperatures to southern Manitoba Tuesday. It also brought bands of freezing rain in a swath from the Minnedosa and Dauphin regions, through the southern Interlake, and then to the Ontario border. Most of the freezing rain has ended, although some pockets may continue early this morning. Even though the freezing rain is gone, the iciness on the ground persists.

A cold front will sweep through southern Manitoba bringing a strong north wind and plummeting temperatures today. This gusty wind will likely give some poor visibilities in blowing snow to parts of the Red River Valley later today and Wednesday night.

For Thunder Bay up to 15 cm of snow is possible. Much more snow is expected in Marathon, and in the areas north of Lake Superior
