PORT HURON, Mich. – Taking on some of the top AAA teams across North America the Thunder Bay Bantam Kings wrapped up competition at the Silver Stick International tournament in Port Huron, Mich., with a 1-3 overall record.
Thunder Bay opened up against No. 17 ranked Canton Victory Honda and dropped a 5-2 decision.
Victory Honda started strong and built up a 3-0 lead past the midway mark of the contest before the Kings’ Alex Atwill struck shorthanded late in the second stanza.
Hunter Matyasovszky brought his side closer early in the third, but Canton tacked on two more in the late going to pull out the win.
Brayden McKever suffered the loss in goal for Thunder Bay.
Up next the Kings took on the Brantford 99ers, who are tabbed 12th in Ontario, and suffered a narrow 4-3 setback.
Shaymus Stevenson with a pair and Jeremy Dunmore accounted for the Thunder Bay markers in that one with Gage Stewart in net in the defeat.
A real stiff test awaited Thunder Bay in their third game as they met the second-ranked AAA bantam side from across the U.S., in the Pittsburgh Penguins Elite, who would eventually blank Thunder Bay 6-0 in their meeting.
Finishing up play Saturday, the Kings skated to an impressive 4-0 victory over Detroit Belle Tire to conclude play on a winning note.
Dunmore supplied the eventual game-winner midway through the first period.
Tyler Lewis and Dunmore added offensive efforts in the middle frame to extend the Kings’ cushion before Jacob Sargent rounded out the scoring in the third.
Stevenson dished out two assists in the Thunder Bay triumph while Stewart posted the shutout.
