THUNDER BAY – There are fewer Extreme Cold Warnings in effect for Northwestern Ontario. Warnings for the City of Thunder Bay, Kenora, Rainy River, Fort Frances, Dryden and Vermilion Bay have ended. That is not to say the region has warmed up a lot, however, today’s forecast high for Thunder Bay of minus 14 will likely feel balmy. This morning it is -30c in Thunder Bay. The cold spot in Ontario is Armstrong at -42.1 °C.

For Thunder Bay, the forecast is calling for a 30 percent chance of flurries late this morning. There should be a few flurries beginning early this afternoon. There is a risk of snow squalls this afternoon. Local snowfall amounts 2 to 4 cm are expected. Winds of up to 15 km/h. The Windchill will be minus 37 this morning and minus 28 this afternoon.

A period of very cold wind chills continues.

Extreme wind chill values of minus 40 or below are occurring this morning.

Wind chills will moderate during daytime hours today. However, wind chill values near minus 40 or below are expected in some areas again tonight.

Extreme cold puts everyone at risk.

Risks are greater for young children, older adults, people with chronic illnesses, people working or exercising outdoors, and those without proper shelter.

Watch for cold-related symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain, muscle pain and weakness, numbness and colour change in fingers and toes.

Dress warmly. Dress in layers that you can remove if you get too warm. The outer layer should be wind resistant.

Keep emergency supplies in your vehicle such as extra blankets and jumper cables.

If it’s too cold for you to stay outside, it’s too cold for your pet to stay outside.
