Lakehead blanks Brock to sweep weekend series

THUNDER BAY – SPORTS – Led by the goaltending of Devin Green and two goals by Grant Valiquette, the Lakehead Thunderwolves blanked Brock 3-0 to gain a weekend sweep over the Badgers in front of 1,951 fans at the Fort William Gardens on Saturday night.

Dylan Butler scored the winner just 34 seconds into the game when he beat Brock goalie Clint Windsor through the wickets, with the helpers going to Scott Gall and Jonathon Masters.

Grant Valiquette knocked home a rebound to put the Wolves up by two goals midway through the first, with Sam Schutt and Jake Whitlock getting the assists.

Late in the second period, Valiquette received a long pass from Butler right after leaving the penalty box, and then sped in alone on Windsor and beat him low on the blocker side to give Lakehead a 3-0 lead heading into the third.

Brock had some good scoring chances in the final frame, but Green held strong to preserve the shutout.

Total shots on goal in the game were 34-31 in favor of the Thunderwolves.

For the night, Lakehead was 0-for-4 on the power play, while Brock went 0-for 3.

The win was the fourth in a row for the Wolves and moves them into fourth place in the West Division with an OUA record to 4-3-1 (6-5-1 overall).

The Wolves will embark on a three-game road trip next weekend with games at Guelph, York and Ryerson.
