FORT FRANCES, ON – The Thunder Bay Topper’s Midget A Queens played a marathon of four games in 24 hours this weekend at the Scott Clendenning Showcase in Fort Frances.
On Friday, both goaltenders were perfect earning a shutout each as Madeline Knauff would backstop the Queens in a 10-0 win over Beaver Brae Broncos – Cassandra Carangi had a 5-point game with a hat trick and two helpers – and then Mya Gowanlock posted a shutout in a much closer 2-0 victory over the hometown Fort Frances Muskies. Kailey Swerhun and Jocelyn Wojciechowski would score the only goals of the game.
On Saturday, the Queens would take on the Dryden Eagles, jumping out to an early 3-0 lead on goals by Swerhun and Carangi (2), the Eagles would get a lone goal in the second period but Caitlin Olinski answered back for Thunder Bay en route to a 4-1 win.
In the afternoon the Toppers Queens would run into the Thunder Bay Fury. The Queens would get off to a slow start, this being their 4th game in 24 hours, as the Fury would knock in two goals in the first period. The Queens would get on the board in the third to cut the lead to one but the Fury would regain the lead just over 2-minutes later and hold the 3-1 victory.
The Queens’ 3-1 record matched that of Fort Frances and the Fury making a 3-way tie for first place.
