Renowned Mi’kmaq Artist Taken Far Too Soon

THUNDER BAY – A very special person has been taken from us.

On Sunday, October 15th, 2017, Cathy Elliott was hit and killed in a traffic accident.

Cathy was a Mi’kmaq actor, playwright, and composer. She sang, she was an artist, an activist and she was a very caring person.

She selflessly shared her gifts with many people.

I first came into contact with Cathy Elliott when Jordan Wabbasse from Webiquie First Nation went missing in Thunder Bay. Jordan had participated in programs with Cathy, and she was tireless in helping to share and spread the word on Jordan.

Later she contributed articles on some of the efforts she was working on in the Ontario North. Click the link to read some of her pieces.

Her work in Northern communities to help youth find their voices and find purpose in their lives was amazing.

We need people with the dedication Cathy showed and shared.

Finding out she had passed away on Sunday night came via social media. Postings on her Facebook page as family and friends shared their grief came fast and steady.

Cathy touched a lot of lives and she made a very positive difference in the lives she touched.

For me, it was her tireless efforts to make a difference that made her so special.

Canada’s Art Community has lost a very special person. Cathy Elliott.
