THUNDER BAY – At 8:18 pm Thunder Bay Fire Rescue received an alarm from 911. The initial dispatch indicated a person was struggling in the McIntyre River near May Street. As the Command unit for Thunder Bay Fire Rescue arrived there were numerous police units on scene searching the river bank. The commanding officer immediately noticed a person floating face down in the water just east of the bridge.
Police were quickly notified and immediately entered the water and made contact with the person. The male was unresponsive. Newly arrived fire crews threw a rope to the officers and the male was quickly brought to shore. Firefighters assessed the patient and began CPR. Once paramedics arrived the male was placed on a stretcher while CPR continued. He was transported to the hospital. His condition is unknown at this time.
Witnesses claim that the male was seen swimming in distress a short time before the arrival of first responders.
