GREENSTONE – THUNDER BAY – On Friday, September 22, 2017 at approximately 1:23 am, a uniform member of the Greenstone Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop on Highway 11 at Suckle Lake between the towns of Longlac and Geraldton, Ontario. The officer initiated the stop after registering speeds in excess of 50 kilometres per hour over the posted speed limit (commonly known as stunt driving) with a RADAR device.
During the investigation the driver of the vehicle identified himself verbally using a false name and date of birth.
Police soon detected signs of intoxication and the driver was arrested for impaired operation of a motor vehicle.
Once identified, police also determined that the driver’s licence is currently under two suspensions.
The driver was transported to the Greenstone OPP detachment to provide samples of his breath to a trained Breath Technician Officer. The driver, Geordie TAIT, 39 years old, of Thunder Bay, Ontario, was subsequently charged with:
- Driving while ability impaired by alcohol contrary to section 253 (1)(a) of the Criminal Code
- Driving with More than 80mgs. of Alcohol in blood contrary to section 253 (1)(b) of the Criminal Code
- Obstructing a Peace Officer contrary to section 129 (a) of the Criminal Code
- Two counts of Driving While Under Suspension contrary to section 53 (1) of the Highway Traffic Act
- Drive Motor Vehicle – Perform Stunt contrary to section 172 (1) of the Highway Traffic Act
He was held for a bail hearing before the Ontario Court of Justice, on September 22, 2017 at which time he was remanded to custody in Thunder Bay and will appear in Court again on Monday, September 25, 2017 to answer to the charges.
