Grand Marais – Regional  A yacht race that covers 77 nautical miles will begin in Grand Marais Harbor on Saturday morning.

There will be a skippers meeting at 11 a.m. near the Grand Marais Coast Guard Station. Then the nine sailboats, ranging between 30 and 40 feet long, will line up near Grand Marais’ famous light house pier.

Fleet Captain of the Thunder Bay Yacht Club Bob Vander Ploeg says it will be quite a spectacle to witness the boats leaving the harbor. They are expected to arrive in Thunder Bay Sunday, July 30, around dawn.

“The race is called the ‘international’, because it always crosses the U.S./Canadian border one way or the other,” says Vander Ploeg.  The annual race began in the late sixties.”
