THUNDER BAY – Ontario is supporting 204 new and innovative projects that will respond to local needs and help build stronger communities across the province. “I’m pleased our government is supporting these valuable projects in Northwestern Ontario through the Ontario Trillium Foundation’s seed and collective impact grants. The funded projects are new and innovative — and I look forward to seeing the positive impact they will have on our residents and community,” comments Bill Mauro, MPP Thunder Bay – Atikokan.

In Thunder Bay, the province is supporting the following projects at the idea or conceptual stage:

  • Lakehead Social Planning Council will receive $74,000 for the delivery of a program that offers shelter to homeless individuals during the coldest months.
  • Nishnawbe Aski Nation will receive $75,000 to develop a prototype greenhouse unit with the assistance of Indigenous youth.
    • New Directions Speaker School will receive $54,000 to deliver services to empower the homeless in the Community towards enhanced financial stability.
    • Long Lake #58 First Nation will receive $60,000 to develop and deliver an environmental career summer internship program.

Projects are part of the Ontario Trillium Foundation’s Seed Investment Stream, which helps communities meet local needs through ideas and projects and approaches, such as helping people find work, helping newcomers settle in a community or helping volunteer organizations boost their membership.

“Our government recognizes the importance of helping communities respond to local unique needs. The projects announced today demonstrate the versatility and scope of this fund with new and innovative ways of addressing local needs to benefit the community,” says Eleanor McMahon, Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sport.

Tim Jackson, Board Chair, Ontario Trillium Foundation states “The Ontario Trillium Foundation is proud to support projects that explore opportunities that strengthen communities through the Seed and Collective Impact Investment Streams. We are always encouraged by the diversity and quality of the initiatives in communities, and we know great things will come from these projects.”
