Road Funding – “We need to pledge as much funding as we can” Gilbert

Fred GilbertTHUNDER BAY – The long campaign to October’s Ontario Provincial election has started in earnest. Thunder Bay-Atikokan Progressive Conservative candidate Fred Gilbert says “With a PC government at Queen’s Park, every municipality will benefit from the provincial gax tax revenue. Under the current Liberal government, only 89 of the province’s 444 municipalities benefit from the gas tax revenue”.

Ontario PC leader Tim Hudak has pledged in the Party’s changebook that the dedicated revenue from the provincial gas tax to municipalities with transit systems, will be increased so that all municipalities will have a share of the revenue. The Ontario PC party will respect the unique priorities of individual cities and towns, and give them the ability to choose between spending on roads, bridges, and transit.

“An Ontario PC government would disperse the gas tax revenue to all communities to meet their local infrastructure needs,” said Gilbert. “Roads are vital in the vast area of northern Ontario. We need to pledge as much funding as we can to help maintain rural road systems that help support the northern Ontario economy.”

The changebook says no municipality will receive less funding than it currently does; every municipality will be able to count on receiving some level of investment. So townships like Conmee that need extra funding for road improvements, would benefit from a Progressive Conservative provincial government.
