“Throwin’ It Out There!” Event a Big Thank You to Pottery Lovers in the City

THUNDER  BAY – LIVING – The Thunder Bay Potters’ Guild will be “Throwin’ It Out There!” over the next few weeks. Gift-wrapped pottery pieces have been popping up around Thunder Bay in some of the strangest places. The first was at Madhouse this past weekend when a group of women heading home after a great night out spotted it on a barrel near the front door.

“We purposely set it down there to make it look part of the décor,” said Noël Keag, a local potter and Communications Director of the Thunder Bay Potters’ Guild. “It took a little bit of time for someone to spot it, but eventually a very nice woman found it and took it home. She was thrilled!”

That particular piece was a bowl made by Karen Cocks of Kamelot Pottery. Other pieces will be popping up around town including mugs and bowls made by members of the Thunder Bay Potters’ Guild – all wrapped in cellophane like a mini-gift basket. The “Throwin’ It Out There!” event will be happening across the city in the weeks leading up to the Thunder Bay Potters’ Guild June Fair and pottery sale at the Marina’s Taiji Gardens on Saturday, June 24, 2017. Visitors can watch demonstrations and even try potting on the wheel themselves. The popular Clay Pen is back again this year for kids to play with clay while parents watch or shop.

“This sale has been going on for over 40 years. Originally, it was on Arthur St. including at the West Arthur Community Centre, but last year we moved to the Taiji Gardens at the Marina. It’s a nice, central location and a beautiful setting to display our pottery,” Keag said.

Keag encourages the people of Thunder Bay to keep their eye open for these gifts and post a selfie with their new piece of pottery to the Thunder Bay Potters’ Guild Facebook page.

“Thunder Bay loves pottery and our local potters are extremely well known,” Keag said. “This is a fun way to say thanks to all the local support we’ve had over the years, and to remind them about our new location.”
