Significant ice build-up due to a long-lasting period of freezing rain is expected or occurring.

Significant freezing rain and ice pellets continuing into Thursday.

Freezing rain and ice pellets associated with a strong spring storm have moved into the region this evening. This storm has the potential to be a significant ice storm, with ice accretion amounts of 10 to 20 mm possible by Thursday morning. Ice pellet accumulations of 5 cm are forecast in addition to the freezing rain. Widespread power outages are likely with this storm.

Freezing rain and ice pellets will change to snow near Thunder Bay Thursday morning, and for regions north of Lake Superior Thursday afternoon.

Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots will become icy, slippery and extremely hazardous. Beware of branches or electrical wires that could break under the weight of ice. Extended and widespread utility outages are possible. Stay away from fallen power lines. Public Safety Canada encourages everyone to make an emergency plan and get an emergency kit with drinking water, food, medicine, a first-aid kit and a flashlight.
