THUNDER BAY – Thunder Bay Fire Rescue was busy overnight with a structural fire on the north side of the city.

At approximately 02:30AM EDT on April 13th Thunder Bay Fire Rescue were called to a report of a structural fire on north Cumberland Street at St James Street.

The first arriving unit assessed the situation and called for a second alarm.

The building was vacant and secure with smoke emitting from the roof and wall at the rear of the building.

Crews attacked the fire from two directions. One by removing the exterior cladding on the rear wall and gable end and the other by cutting two trenches in the roof to gain access to the burning attic space. This was done quickly and the fire was declared under control a short while later. Crews remained on the scene for another hour to extinguish hidden hot spots.

There were no injuries as a result of this fire. The building suffered mostly water damage to the rear third as well as fire damage to the rear wall and gable end.

There were five pumpers, one aerial device and a command vehicle on scene. A total of 22 crew members from Thunder Bay Fire Rescue attended as well as a Thunder Bay Police Service officer who provided traffic control on Cumberland Street.

Inspectors at Thunder Bay Fire Rescue have been notified and will be looking into the cause today.
