THUNDER BAY – O’Connor Township is getting some provincial help with clean up and recovery costs from a heavy downpour which caused flooding in O’Connor on June 25, 2016. Eligible costs under the program may be as much as $56,200.
“I want to recognize the dedicated municipal staff in O’Connor, who were out inspecting and repairing roads and ditches immediately after last summer’s flood. We are pleased to provide financial support to help clean up the damage from this torrential rain,” states Bill Mauro, Minister of Municipal Affairs.
The Municipal Disaster Recovery Assistance program helps municipalities address extraordinary emergency response costs and damage to essential property or infrastructure like bridges, roads and public buildings, as a result of a natural disaster.

- The province delivers the Municipal Disaster Recovery Assistance program, which provides funding to eligible municipalities using a sliding scale, cost-sharing formula.
- A municipality may be eligible under the program if its disaster-related costs reach a threshold of three per cent of its Own-Purpose Taxation levy.
- Own Purpose Taxation is the amount of tax a municipality is eligible to collect to fund its own budget, minus certain adjustments, and is intended as an indicator of financial capacity.
- The program came into effect on March 1, 2016, replacing the public component of the Ontario Disaster Relief Assistance Program.
