THUNDER BAY – The Save the TaTas fundraiser took place last night at the Slovak Legion. Over 1,000 people filtered through the party, which raised over $10,000 for breast cancer research.

The event was organized by The Commissary, a local family-owned deli, which has been affected by the disease.

Organizer and breast cancer survivor Marie Penko says the event was an overwhelming success.

“The support of our friends, family, and local businesses who have sponsored the event has been amazing,” tells Marie. “It’s become much, much bigger than we ever imagined.”

Classic rockers Blood Red Moon provided the entertainment for the evening, but the real highlight of the night was Billy Penko shaving his head after growing his hair for the last five years. He was joined alongside by Taylor Tyson, who also shaved his head as well as his year-old beard. Together, they raised an additional $4,200 to lose their locks.

The Commissary Deli encourages men and women everywhere to save their own TaTas with regular checks and screenings.
