KENORA – POLITICS – We’re just two months into 2017, the year that Canada turns 150 years old, and there are plenty of events, contests and promotions that you can be a part of. I encourage everyone to get involved this year with big celebrations taking place across the country.

ParticipACTION kicked off the new year with their 150 Play List. They’re encouraging Canadians to get active by trying out 150 sports and activities that define our land and people – from hockey to cheerleading, dog walking, and more. Participants create a profile online and track the activities as they complete them. There are daily and monthly prizes, as well as the grand prize of a brand new Chevrolet of your choice. The list of activities is extensive, so there’s something for everyone.

Returning this year is the Aboriginal Arts and Stories Competition. This competition is open to all Aboriginal youth (self-identified Status and non-Status First Nations, Inuit, and Métis) from ages nine to 29 from across the country. Participants can enter a writing and arts competition that explores Aboriginal heritage and culture. Art work must be two-dimensional in nature, but can be in various mediums, including painting, sketching, charcoal, and photography. The writing competition can take any style including short stories, plays, poetry, and screenplays, so you get the chance to tell your story in whichever way you want! All submissions are due by March 31st.

One of the most popular 150 promotions so far, has been the Free 2017 Parks Canada Discovery Pass. For all of 2017, this pass gives you unlimited opportunity to enjoy National Parks, National Marine Conservation Areas, and National Historic Sites across the country. The pass is valid for everyone arriving in the same vehicle. To get your free pass visit: Parks Canada.

However you choose to celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday, I encourage you to take a look at what’s happening in your community, region and of course across the country. With so much going on, you’ll be sure to find something that you’ll enjoy. I know I’m looking forward to celebrating the big 150 this year with you.
