THUNDER BAY – NEWS – At approximately 09:00 AM Thunder Bay Fire Rescue Service received an alarm for a fire in a chip bin at the Resolute Saw Mill on Darryl Ave.

Three pumpers and the Platoon Chief were dispatched.

The first arriving pumper encountered smoke and fire coming from a wood chip bin used for loading trailers tractor trailers.

A second alarm was called which responded two more pumpers and an Aerial Ladder, thus bringing the total number of fire fighters on scene to 22.

The Aerial Ladder was set up and attacked the fire from the top of the bin, keeping the fire fighters a safe distance from the bin access points.

When the fire was sufficiently cooled, the bottom of the bin was opened and the chips slowly released to the ground where a fire fighter with a hose line applied water.

The chips were moved by a loader to a safe area where a foam solution was applied. Once the bin was empty, hot spots were cooled and fire extension was checked. The damage was significant as some equipment would need repair before it could be utilized again.

There were no injuries.
