TORONTO – SPORTS – The Lakehead Thunderwolves were outgunned 7-2 by the Ryerson Rams at the Mattamy Athletic Centre in Toronto on Thursday night.
Daniel Clairmont opened the scoring for Ryerson when he beat Wolves’ goalie Devin Green high on the glove side 4:57 into the contest.
Devon Paliani had plenty of time to outwait the Lakehead defense before firing a hard wrister from the slot past Green to put Ryerson up by two at 11:48, and 17 seconds later Chris Marchese converted on a nice saucer pass from behind the Wolves’ net to give the Rams a 3-0 lead.
Sam Schutt got Lakehead on the board when he tapped the puck behind Ryerson netminder Charlie Graham after a nice set-up by Grant Valiquette with just over a minute remaining in the first period, with Dylan Donnelly getting the other assist.
Ryerson’s Matt Mistele knocked one in from the doorstep 1:40 into the middle frame, and four minutes later Clairmont scored two goals just 25 seconds apart to put complete his hat trick and put the Rams up 6-1. That chased Green from the Lakehead net, where Justin McDonald took over the goaltending duties for the remainder of the match.
John Carpino beat McDonald on a wrap-around play at 11:57 of the third period to extend the Rams’ lead to 7-1.
Schutt tallied his second of night with a one-timer off a face-off won cleanly by Valiquette at 14:42 to round out the scoring.
Both teams were held scoreless on the power play, with Lakehead getting five opportunities and Ryerson only one.
Total shots on goal favored the Rams by a margin of 36-30.
The Wolves three-game road trip continues with games at Waterloo on Friday and Saturday.
