THUNDER BAY – SPORTS – The Lakehead Thunderwolves were edged 2-1 by the York Lions in double overtime in front of 2068 fans in a very entertaining game at the Fort William Gardens on Friday night.
Lakehead netminder Devin Green was outstanding, making 46 saves on the night to keep the Wolves in the contest.
Billy Jenkins got Lakehead on the board 8:26 into the first period when he took a pass from Zach Whitlock and ripped a hard shot past York goalie Mack Shields low on the stick side.
That turned out to be the only goal Shields would surrender for the rest of the night.
After a scoreless second stanza, York tied the game 42 seconds into third when Trevor Petersen finally solved Green with a shot from the slot that beat him low on his glove side while the Lions held the man advantage.
That would be the last goal scored in regulation.
In the first five-minute overtime session, the Wolves’ Carson Dubchak had a great chance to end it but missed on a breakaway.
Lakehead’s Cody Alcock, Sam Schutt and Linden Springer were all stymied by Shields early in the second O.T. before Dexter Bricker finished off an odd-man rush to net the winner for York.
Total shots on goal in the game were 48-33 for the Lions.
For the night, the Wolves went 0-for-3 on the power play, while the Lions went 1-for-2.
The Molson Three Stars of the game were:
- Devin Green, Lakehead
- Dexter Bricker, York
- Trevor Petersen, York
Lakehead will look to exact a measure of revenge when the two teams meet again on Saturday night.
