THUNDER BAY – The worst fears of the friends and family of Jordan Wabasse have been realized. The update from Search Coordinator Lillian Suganaqueb: at 7:53 pm: the Coroner contacted the Mother (Bernice Jacob), it is confirmed the body found on Kam River yesterday is Jordan Wabasse.
Thunder Bay Police confirm, “The deceased male whose body was discovered in the Kaministiquia River has been identified as 15 year old Jordan Wabasse. The identification was made following a post mortem examination conducted here in Thunder Bay this afternoon.
The preliminary results indicate the cause of death as drowning. Foul play is not suspected in Jordan’s death.
Jordan went missing on February 7, 2011 and has been the subject of a large search effort.
The Webequie First Nation youth was last seen getting off a bus in the Westfort area of Thunder Bay.
More information will be supplied as it is available.
On a personal note, although I never met Jordan, the efforts of the friends and family and First Nations community who have rallied behind the cause of finding this young man has been monumental. The people from across Northwestern Ontario, and especially the First Nations communities have taken this cause and made it their own.
All of those efforts have demonstrated that there is a depth of care and concern deeper than anyone could have imagined.
Jordan will now head home, and for some that will start closure. I also think that this incident might also be the start of a major effort to change things in Thunder Bay for the young people who leave their homes in the north, and come of our city for high school.
There have been people from across Canada and across North America who have seen what has happened in our region.
Let us all pray that this is the case.
