THUNDER BAY – WEATHER – The winter storm warnings for Northwestern Ontario continue.

Much of the Colorado low and the storm appears centred to the west of Ontario however. Brandon and Winnipeg Manitoba are under blizzard warnings.

For the Kenora region a Winter Storm Warning with up to 15-30 cm of snow are still expected.

Blizzard warning in effect for:

  • City of Winnipeg

Blizzard conditions with poor visibility in snow and blowing snow are expected or occurring.

A major storm system continues to significantly impact holiday travel plans for all of southern Manitoba and southeastern Saskatchewan.

Early this morning the Colorado low is located just south of Lake of the Woods and is moving northeastward. Heavy snow and blowing snow spread throughout southern Manitoba during the night, and it continues this morning. In addition, winds are strengthening this morning as they shift from northeast to northwest.

As a result, even with the snow becoming lighter throughout the day, visibilities will be slow to improve as winds remain strong into the afternoon hours. The last area to improve will be a strip from Lake Manitoba towards Emerson where poor visibilities will continue until early this evening.

Total snowfall amounts will be in the 20 to 30 cm range throughout southern Manitoba, the bulk of which has already fallen.

The Weatherunderground map shows that bulk of the storm appears to have centred west and east of Thunder Bay.

Thunder Bay snow clearing crews are already out. The initial focus will be for main arterial roads and bus routes.

Winter storm warning in effect for:

  • City of Thunder Bay
  • Kenora – Grassy Narrows – Whitedog
  • Sioux Narrows – Nestor Falls – Morson
  • Dryden – Vermillion Bay – Ignace
  • Upsala – Raith – English River
  • Fort Frances – Rainy River –

Hazardous winter conditions are expected.

A winter storm will affect the regions this morning.

A band of heavy snow will likely mix with ice pellets or freezing rain before changing to freezing drizzle or flurries this morning.

Further snow and ice pellet accumulations in the 5 to 10 cm range are possible this morning.

Hazardous travel conditions will occcur this morning in heavy snow and blowing snow. Wind gusts to 75 kilometres per hour are possible especially near the lake Superior shores. Some improvement is expected this morning as the precipitation becomes much lighter.

The storm is due to a Colorado low tracking northeastward and expected to cross northern Ontario on a Fort Frances to Moosonee path today.
