THUNDER BAY – WEATHER – The Winter Storm warning for Northwestern Ontario has now extended further north, adding Attawapiskat and Peawanuk with Winter Storm Advisories. The Winter Storm warnings issued earlier on December 25th for Northwestern Ontario are still in effect.
The Winter Storm Warnings have been extended right across Northern Ontario. For the far north, the winter storm will extend until Tuesday.
For the City of Thunder Bay, residents are requested where possible to keep their vehicles off of residential streets to allow city crews to clear snow faster once the storm ends.
Added Winter storm warnings in effect for:
- Fraserdale – Pledger Lake
- Kapuskasing – Hearst – Smooth Rock Falls
- Attawapiskat – Peawanuk
Environment Canada is reporting that hazardous winter conditions are expected.
This major winter storm will affect the regions Monday and Monday night with snow and blowing snow.
Snow and blowing snow will spread across the regions late tonight and early Monday morning, then continue into Monday night. Significant northeasterly winds will reduce visibility at times to near zero. Snowfall accumulations will be in the 15 to 30 centimetre range. There is also a risk of freezing rain during the event.
Travel will be hazardous beginning late tonight or early Monday morning. Road closures will be possible.
The storm is due to a Colorado low tracking northeastward and expected to cross northern Ontario on a Fort Frances to Moosonee path Monday. The heaviest snow will end Monday night, however some blowing snow may persist into early Tuesday afternoon.
For travellers planning to head east, there are freezing rain warnings in effect for the north shore of Lake Superior.
Freezing rain warning in effect for:
- Agawa – Lake Superior Park
- Sault Ste. Marie – St. Joseph Island
- Searchmont – Montreal River Harbour – Batchawana Bay
Freezing rain is expected on Monday morning and will move from west to east across the regions. Freezing rain amounts across the Sudbury – North Bay corridor may be fairly significant with several millimetres possible. The freezing rain is expected to end by Monday afternoon.
