THUNDER BAY – ARTS – The City of Thunder Bay is seeking proposals for artwork that will be featured at events during the 2017 programming season. The Public Art Program has released two Calls to Artists for “SnowDay 2017 Snow Sculptures” and “Award Design for Thunder Bay Arts & Heritage Awards”.
Artists and artist teams are invited to submit concepts for snow sculptures to be created for the City’s fifth annual SnowDay. SnowDay celebrates all things winter with snow sculptures and outdoor activities for all to enjoy at Prince Arthur’s Landing on Family Day, Monday, Feb. 20. This year’s snow sculptures will interpret the theme “Canada150” in celebration of Canada’s 150th anniversary. Participating artists have the opportunity to win a $1,000 cash prize for the juried SnowDay Award as well as non-cash prizes for the People’s Choice and Carvers’ Choice Awards.
The City of Thunder Bay is also seeking concepts for the design of a three-dimensional award that will be presented to recipients of the annual Thunder Bay Arts & Heritage Awards. The Thunder Bay Arts & Heritage Awards celebrate the cultural sector in Thunder Bay through recognition of local arts and heritage professionals and organizations that have achieved excellence in their fields. The Awards also recognize the supporters of culture who have played a significant role in making these individual and organizational achievements possible. The seventh annual Thunder Bay Arts & Heritage Awards, presented by The Walleye, will take place on Thursday, Feb. 16, 2017. Local and regional artists are invited to submit up to two award designs. The successful artist will also fabricate the awards for presentation at the event for the next two years.
“These are two great opportunities for local artists to play a key role in two of Thunder Bay’s signature events,” said Ash Young, Cultural Development & Events Supervisor for the City of Thunder Bay. “We are very excited about these competitions and looking forward to seeing our local artists’ excellence and creativity in their submissions.”
Both competitions close on Thursday, Dec. 8, at 4:30 pm. Submissions will be reviewed by a jury that includes members of the City of Thunder Bay Public Art Committee and representatives of the Recreation & Culture Division.
