KENORA – Ontario is helping to connect communities, keep people moving, create jobs and boost economic growth in Kenora by supporting upgrades to roads, bridges and other local community infrastructure. Minister of Municipal Affairs and MPP for Thunder Bay-Atikokan Bill Mauro made the announcement today in Kenora. Communities benefitting from upgrades include:

  • City of Kenora
  • City of Dryden
  • Township of Ear Falls
  • Township of Ignace
  • Township of Machin
  • Township of Pickle Lake
  • Municipality of Red Lake
  • Redditt Local Services Board
  • Municipality of Sioux Lookout
  • Township of Sioux Narrows-Nester Falls

Ontario is making the largest investment in public infrastructure in the province’s history — about $160 billion over 12 years, supporting 110,000 jobs every year across the province with projects such as hospitals, schools, roads, bridges and transit. Since 2015, the province has announced support for more than 475 projects that will keep people and goods moving, connect communities and improve quality of life. “Investing in roads, bridges and other critical infrastructure in Kenora, will help to create jobs and provide opportunities for families and businesses in this community. For the City of Kenora, the province will provide up to $279,134 in 2017, increasing to $537,104 in 2018, and $825,390 by 2019, through the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund. In total, 10 communities in Kenora will receive up to $5.4 million to upgrade community infrastructure over the next three years. This is further proof that our government remains committed to Northwestern Ontario and ensuring our economy is strong,” explains Bill Mauro, Minister of Municipal Affairs.

“Our government is committed to working with communities in Northwestern Ontario to provide stable, predictable funding to build and repair critical infrastructure. Investments like the one announced today help to support significant economic activity in local communities, create jobs and help maintain a strong regional business climate across the province,” comments Jeff Leal, Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.

QUICK FACTS

  • In total, 10 communities in Kenora will receive up to $5.4 million to upgrade community infrastructure.
  • Thirty-seven communities in Northwestern Ontario are receiving up to $24.8 million in predictable, formula-based funding through the Ontario Community Infrastructure Fund (OCIF) over the next three years to invest in critical local infrastructure projects.
  • Ontario is tripling its investments through OCIF from $100 million in 2015-16 to $300 million in 2018-19. Of the $300 million allocated for 2018-19, the province will allocate $100 million for municipalities to apply to invest in crucial infrastructure projects, and $200 million for predictable, formula-based funding.
  • Municipalities receive formula funding based on their economic conditions and their infrastructure needs. These funds can be used by communities to upgrade local roads, bridges and water and wastewater facilities.
  • OCIF is part of Moving Ontario Forward, the government’s plan to invest $31.5 billion over 10 years in transit, transportation and other priority infrastructure across the province.
  • OCIF supports projects in municipalities with a population of less than 100,000 as of the 2011 census, as well as municipalities that are located in Northern or rural Ontario.
