TORONTO – SPORTS – The Lakehead Thunderwolves edged the Toronto Varsity Blues 3-2 at Varsity Arena on Saturday evening, the Wolves second win over the Blues in as many nights.
Lakehead’s Cody Alcock scored the only goal of the opening period when he flew down the left wing and fired a laser past Toronto netminder Andrew Hunt from the top of the circle, with Austin McDonald getting the assist.
Toronto’s Josh Hanson evened the score early in the second stanza while the Blues were on a five-minute power play after E.J. Faust was issued a major penalty and a game misconduct late in the first.
Brennen Dubchak replied for the Wolves when he tipped Matt Alexander’s point shot between Hunt’s legs at 5:58.
The Blues got another power play marker on a blast from Charlie Connell that beat Lakehead goalie Devin Green at 11:53, and the game remained deadlocked at 2-2 going into the third.
The final frame saw plenty of end-to-end action and good scoring chances for each side, but both goalies were equal to the task and it looked like the game might be heading to overtime for the second consecutive night.
But Brennen Dubchak potted the winner on a one-timer from the edge of the crease with only 1:36 remaining after a nice set-up by Dylan Butler and Liam Alcalde.
Total shots on goal for the night were 39-37 for Lakehead.
The Thunderwolves went 0-for-3 on the power play, while the Varsity Blues were 2-for-3.
The win improves Lakehead’s OUA record to 3-2, which moves the Wolves up into fourth place in the ten-team West Division.
Lakehead will look to continue its winning ways next weekend when the Wolves travel to Montreal for a pair of games with the Concordia Stingers.
