THUNDER BAY – The sun was slowly creeping through the clouds after a lightning storm last night, as we woke up on Day Three at Camp Quality Northwestern Ontario. Campers were excited to get started on their very busy day ahead.
After a delicious breakfast, our campers met under the gazebo to receive their list of items for the camp-wide scavenger hunt.
Teams were grouped by cabin, so the campers were teammates with their “roomies”, according to Sam, our youngest camper.
After searching far and wide (or in other words, within camp limits), the teams made their way back to the finish line with their goodies in tow. The ladies of Cabin Five were ecstatic to be triumphant over all the other teams. Congrats girls!
Next, the sun came out just in time for a packed afternoon! Campers had many fun activities to choose from. Our friends, Don and Maelyn organized our annual tennis tournament down at the tennis courts which brought out the competitive nature of many of the campers. We have some future Milos Raonics in our midst!
Other campers had the opportunity to fish on Loon Lake with officers from the Thunder Bay Police Service. Among our campers, we had both an experienced fisherwoman who believed that the officers did not know the best spots and that she could do better in Dryden, and a newly minted fisherman who not only had a blast on his first trip out, but also kissed his first fish! All the campers had a great time fishing with the officers. Thank you all so much!
Today was the first day for our campers to go tubing, offered by some fellow Loon Lakers (thanks to you!). Since it had warmed up so much from the morning, many campers had a need for speed and took the opportunity to get out on the lake.
After everyone was refreshed from our afternoon snack, it was time to take on the officers in our annual soccer battle with the Thunder Bay Police Service. Our goalie Lyndon impressed again letting only two goals in, while our superstar forwards got seven goals in the police net. The game was very competitive but our campers got the best of the police and, although the officers will likely not admit it, the campers were the stronger team. Victory for Camp Quality!
The officers were not too discouraged because they generously came back to camp and barbequed dinner for us.
It was a delicious meal of smokies, hotdogs, hamburgers, salad and popcorn salad (yes, sounds weird, but was really good). We were sad to see the police leave, as everyone loves their visits to our camp, but we’d like to thank them for visiting and for taking the time out of their busy schedules to come and spend the day with us. We’d also like to thank the Thunder Bay Police Association for their generous donation to Camp Quality!
After dinner, the much anticipated CQ Olympic Games commenced. Campers worked together in teams to deliver valuables blindfolded, shoot Frisbees into different sized hoops, master a life-sized Jenga game and much more. The Olympians of Cabin Six were victorious and graciously (or not so graciously) accepted their medals and bouquets during the awards ceremony.
During our spare time after the games, an impromptu dance party broke out, featuring classics like the Macarena and the Cha Cha Slide. The night ended, as always, around the fire, talking, laughing, and singing along to one of our volunteer’s mad guitar skills. A great end, to an amazing, busy day!

On a personal note, cancer has taken both of my grandparents, it tried to take my mom. There are few people in Northwestern Ontario who are not impacted by cancer.
